Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine Brings Doctrine, Support Sombra and a Roadhog Rework

The Final Chapter of the Reign of Talon

Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine began on October 6. It brings a new Support hero, what Blizzard calls one of the biggest changes it has ever made to an existing hero, a Roadhog rework and the first new Escort map in years. It also closes out the Reign of Talon, Overwatch’s first year-long narrative arc, during a year when BlizzCon celebrated 10 years of Overwatch.

New Support Hero: Doctrine

Doctrine is a vampire-inspired Support built around manipulating lifeforce on both sides of a fight:

  • Eternal Scepter: heals allies and damages enemies at mid-to-long range.
  • Bat-like drones: give the team healing and increased attack speed.
  • Infuse: empowers his other abilities.
  • Ultimate: redistributes life. Allies gain Overhealth while enemy maximum health is limited.

Sombra Moves to Support

Sombra is now a Support Tactician:

  • Hotfix targets an ally for healing after a brief cast and can be used while Invisible without immediately breaking stealth.
  • Cyberspace creates an area that heals allies and applies the new Weaken status to enemies, reducing their damage and healing.

Roadhog Rework

The Scrap Gun now fires two bursts per volley, with a stronger center projectile in each. The new Trash Compactor swallows incoming enemy projectiles and fires back an explosive shot whose damage scales with how much it absorbed.

New Map: Watchpoint: Grímsvötn

Watchpoint: Grímsvötn is an Escort map set in an Icelandic volcanic fissure: a former Overwatch Watchpoint turned Helix prison, now held by Talon after Doomfist broke Doctrine out.

Season 5 Schedule

  • October 6 – November 2: Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games. You come back from every death with random new powers. Pledge Offerings to Ashe, Moira or Winston to decide who joins the mode next, and the roster grows to 20 heroes. There is a new Event Pass each week.
  • October 9–26: the Tech Witches cosmetic collection.
  • October 29 – November 1: Team Drives return to Competitive. Win, and your matched teammates stay together for the next game. Finish your Competitive placements first.
  • Unvaulted Passes: revised Battle Passes from Seasons 1–15 return. You can progress one alongside the current Battle Pass, and your previous progress carries over.

Looking further out, Blizzard says the next Overwatch Spotlight arrives in February 2027 with the plan for the year ahead.

RUIN Angle: Team Drives

This is RUIN’s first Overwatch report since 2022, and Team Drives is the reason to pay attention. It is a Competitive mode that rewards keeping a coordinated team together. That is exactly how RUIN plays every game. If you want to run a RUIN stack for Team Drives from October 29 to November 1, say so in Discord, and we will see whether there is enough interest to field squads.
