E3 2012 By Archaos June 12th 2012

E3 once stood for innovation and the hope of exciting new entertainment possibilities. E3 showcased compelling games and technologies that inspired us to imagine a new and glorious future of amazingly realistic graphics and interactive online gaming. The idea of literally being able to play with our friends in a movie quality interactive experience once seemed like science fiction. Now it is a near reality. One would assume that the members of one of the largest online gaming communities would be extremely excited about the prospect of new game releases from E3.

Why then has our reaction to E3 2012 been one of ambivalence and  disappointment with the offerings this year? During our community dinner following E3 in LA we were excited about only a handful of games. Planetside 2 and Elderscrolls online being the only “new” offerings. We agreed that Ubisoft had made a strong showing with Assassin’s Creed III and their new Watch Dogs game.

Despite all of the hype surrounding E3 many of us at Ruin Gaming have come to question how relevant E3 actually is.  E3 faces increasing competition from other gaming trade shows that provide more extensive gaming coverage, notably Gamescom and Pax. As an organization we focus on massive multi-player organization, and most mmos are only available on the PC. Unfortunately E3 2012 focused almost entirely on consoles.

Almost every gamer I speak with shares a passion not only for the games that we play together, but for the technology that makes it all possible. We’re captivated by new advancements in technology that open up new possibilities for engaging entertainment. Unfortunately E3 has become nearly devoid of the type of innovations and advancements we crave.

E3 has been console focused during a period of time when consoles are increasingly antiquated. The XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 are both now nearly seven years old, nearly an eternity by PC standards. Though this has given console developers ample time to perfect their art, squeezing everything out of their aging consoles, there is only so much that can be done. PC games such as Star Wars 1313 show what is possible on modern computers. The game play here rivals the cinematic from their console rivals.

Madden Syndrome

E3 has lost its way, now featuring little exclusive content and fewer technological advancements. Acting now as platform to showcase over-hyped game trailers which rarely show us much actual game-play. Relying instead on flashy cinematics to distract fans from the tired regurgitated gameplay. A quick overview of the games line up at E3 shows the extent to which Madden Syndrome (making minor improvements and stat updates to a game franchise every year simply to re-release it as a new title) has taken hold. There are very few “new” titles.

Many major gaming companies do not make a showing at E3 including Blizzard and NCSoft. Our gaming organization primarily focuses on MMORPGS and MMOS in general. As a result the only upcoming MMO shown at E3 is Planetside 2. Arenanet’s Guild Wars 2, our current upcoming focus.

Watch Dogs

Ubisoft has made an unmistakably strong showing at E3 2012, featuring an entirely new game called Watch Dogs. I won’t go into too much detail regarding the unique gameplay style and setting. Enjoy! Watch Dogs Gameplay Demo – Ubisoft E3 2012 Press Conference
